What is PETROSET II™?
PETROSET II™ is an organophilic solidifier: where PETROSET® and PETROSET H™ treat aqueous (water-based) wastes, PETROSET II™ solidifies wastes having some or all of their liquid components not water-miscible — such as oils.
It will solidify most non-aqueous liquids, such as oils and other hydrocarbons. Under certain applications, it may also be used as a rheology modifier to increase viscosity for improved suspension of solids and emulsion stability.
PETROSET II™ is recommended for industrial applications.
What waste types does PETROSET II™ treat?
PETROSET II's recommended applications are non-aqueous liquids — oils, solvents, and non-aqueous sludges and slurries:
- Oils, hydrocarbon — 3 to 4 lbs/gal
- Oils, synthetic — 3 to 5 lbs/gal
- Solvents — 3 to 6 lbs/gal
- Other non-aqueous liquids — 2 to 6 lbs/gal
- Sludges and slurries, non-aqueous
Loading rates per the Fluid Tech Recommended Media and Loading Rate Guide. Rates vary with waste chemistry — use Fluid Tech's Waste Form Questionnaire and Recommended Media Matrix, or ask our team for a waste-specific recommendation.
What about wastes that mix oil and water?
Solidification of wastes having both water-miscible and water-immiscible components is accomplished using PETROSET II™ in combination with PETROSET® or AQUASET II™.
PETROSET II™ handles the oily, non-water-miscible fraction, while PETROSET® or AQUASET II™ solidifies the aqueous fraction — the Fluid Tech products are designed to stand alone or be used in combination with one another.

Why solidify with a Fluid Tech agent?
Volume increase of wastes treated using Fluid Tech products is typically less than 20% — minimizing volume and weight increases results in container, transportation, and disposal savings as well as reduced generator liability.
- Leach resistance: Fluid Tech products irreversibly bind radioactive and hazardous constituents through naturally occurring ion-exchange mechanisms and form inert solids — stabilizing wastes both chemically and physically, and keeping radioisotopes, heavy metals, and other hazardous constituents from leaching.
- Physical integrity: Solidified wastes maintain their physical integrity through freeze-thaw conditions and the vibrational stresses of transportation, so no incidental or free-standing liquids develop prior to inspection at the final disposition or storage facility.
- Adaptability: Fluid Tech products are designed to stand alone or be used in combination with one another — there is literally no combination of wastes that cannot be solidified.
What should handlers know?
PETROSET II™ contains crystalline silica (quartz, 1–5%), which may become airborne without a visible cloud — avoid breathing dust, avoid creating dusty conditions, and use adequate ventilation; the material is slippery when wet.
The PETROSET II™ Safety Data Sheet carries the signal word Danger with the hazard statement "May cause cancer" and "Causes damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure" — breathing crystalline silica can cause lung disease, including silicosis and lung cancer; avoid breathing dust. The product is toxic to aquatic life: avoid release to the environment and prevent it from entering sewers, waterways, or low areas. It is not restricted for transport (DOT, IATA/ICAO, IMDG/IMO), and if the product itself becomes a waste, it does not meet the criteria of a hazardous waste as defined by the US EPA. Full handling, exposure-control, and disposal guidance is in the Safety Data Sheet.

Frequently asked questions
What liquids does PETROSET II™ solidify?
PETROSET II™ is an organophilic solidifier that will solidify most non-aqueous liquids, such as oils and other hydrocarbons. Its recommended applications are hydrocarbon oils, synthetic oils, solvents, other non-aqueous liquids, and non-aqueous sludges and slurries.
Can PETROSET II™ treat wastes that contain both oil and water?
Yes — in combination. Solidification of wastes having both water-miscible and water-immiscible components is accomplished using PETROSET II™ in combination with PETROSET® or AQUASET II™. PETROSET II™ handles the non-water-miscible (oily) fraction.
How much PETROSET II™ do I need per gallon of waste?
Per the Fluid Tech Recommended Media and Loading Rate Guide: 3 to 4 lbs/gal for hydrocarbon oils, 3 to 5 lbs/gal for synthetic oils, 3 to 6 lbs/gal for solvents, and 2 to 6 lbs/gal for other non-aqueous liquids. Rates vary with waste chemistry — Fluid Tech provides waste-specific recommendations.
What is the shelf life of PETROSET II™?
PETROSET II™ has a shelf life of 24 months when stored in a cool, dry location. It is recommended for industrial applications, and because it is toxic to aquatic life, release to the environment should be avoided.
