AQUASET II-GH™

AQUASET II-GH™ is a versatile absorbent/solidification agent — a granular, semi rapid-setting material used to solidify aqueous liquids with extremely high levels of dissolved solids, such as neutralized acids and bases. Unlike AQUASET II-G™, it sets up to form a hard matrix: load bearing strengths of over 5 tons per square foot, or 69 pounds per square inch, can be achieved.

What is AQUASET II-GH™?

Pile of AQUASET II-GH dark gray granular absorbent and solidification agent

AQUASET II-GH™ is a versatile absorbent/solidification agent — a granular-with-powder, semi rapid-setting material used to solidify aqueous liquids — that, unlike AQUASET II-G™, sets up to form a hard matrix: load bearing strengths of over 5 tons per square foot (69 pounds per square inch) can be achieved.

It treats aqueous solutions with extremely high levels of dissolved solids, such as neutralized acids and bases, and organic liquids that are mixed with water and are water soluble or miscible (e.g. alcohols, benzenes, glycols, low-molecular weight ketones).

Fluid Tech solidification agents are designed to stand alone or be used in combination with one another — while each product has its own specific attributes, there is literally no combination of wastes that cannot be solidified.

What waste types does AQUASET II-GH™ treat?

AQUASET II-GH™ is recommended for water with less than 0.01M salts or organics, neutralized strong acids, neutralized weak acids, water-miscible organics, and aqueous sludges and slurries.

Typical loading rates, per the Fluid Tech Recommended Media and Loading Rate Guide (product added per gallon of waste):

  • Water, with less than 0.01M salts or organics: 6 lbs/gal
  • Neutralized strong acids: 6 – 9 lbs/gal
  • Neutralized weak acids: 6 – 8 lbs/gal
  • Water-miscible organics: 6 – 8 lbs/gal
  • Evaporator concentrates (BWR & PWR): 7 lbs/gal
  • Slurries — ion exchange resins, filter precoat: 6 lbs/gal
  • Ethylene glycol solutions: 6 – 9 lbs/gal (0–35% EG) · 9.5 lbs/gal (35–60% EG) · 10.5 lbs/gal (60–90% EG)

Rates vary by waste stream; request a site-specific recommendation.

How does solidified waste hold up?

Wastes solidified with Fluid Tech products maintain their physical integrity through freeze-thaw conditions and the vibrational stresses encountered during transportation — ensuring no incidental or free-standing liquids develop prior to inspection at the final disposition or storage facility.

  • Volumetric efficiency: volume increase of wastes treated using Fluid Tech products is typically less than 20% — minimizing container, transportation, and disposal costs and reducing generator liability.
  • Leach resistance: Fluid Tech products irreversibly bind radioactive and hazardous constituents through naturally occurring ion-exchange mechanisms and form inert solids, stabilizing wastes both chemically and physically and keeping radioisotopes, heavy metals, and other hazardous constituents from leaching.
  • Hard matrix: unlike AQUASET II-G™, AQUASET II-GH™ sets up to form a hard matrix — load bearing strengths of over 5 tons per square foot (69 pounds per square inch) can be achieved.

What about safety and handling?

AQUASET II-GH™ carries the signal word "Danger": it contains Portland cement — contact with water or sweat releases a caustic solution that can cause severe skin burns and serious eye damage — and crystalline silica (quartz), classified by IARC as Group 1, carcinogenic to humans when inhaled.

Wear impervious gloves such as nitrile, eye protection, and protective clothing. Do not breathe dust; use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Keep containers tightly closed in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place, and do not allow water to contact the product until time of use to preserve product utility. Material can be slippery when wet. Review the full Safety Data Sheet before handling.

Frequently asked questions

Is AQUASET II-GH™ an absorbent or a solidification agent?

Both — Fluid Tech lists AQUASET II-GH™ as an absorbent/solidification agent. It is a versatile, granular-with-powder absorbent that, unlike AQUASET II-G™, sets up to form a hard matrix: load bearing strengths of over 5 tons per square foot, or 69 pounds per square inch, can be achieved.

What waste types does AQUASET II-GH™ treat?

AQUASET II-GH™ is recommended for water with less than 0.01M salts or organics, neutralized strong acids, neutralized weak acids, water-miscible organics, and aqueous sludges and slurries. It treats aqueous solutions with extremely high levels of dissolved solids and organic liquids that are mixed with water and are water soluble or miscible (e.g. alcohols, benzenes, glycols, low-molecular weight ketones).

How much AQUASET II-GH™ do I need per gallon of waste?

Per the Fluid Tech Recommended Media and Loading Rate Guide: 6 lbs/gal for water with less than 0.01M salts or organics, 6 to 9 lbs/gal for neutralized strong acids, 6 to 8 lbs/gal for neutralized weak acids and for water-miscible organics, 7 lbs/gal for BWR & PWR evaporator concentrates, and 6 lbs/gal for ion exchange resin and filter precoat slurries. Rates vary by waste stream — contact Fluid Tech at (423) 271-6505 for a recommendation.

What protective equipment does AQUASET II-GH™ require?

Wear impervious gloves such as nitrile, eye protection, and protective clothing. AQUASET II-GH™ contains Portland cement — contact with water or sweat releases a caustic solution that can cause severe skin burns and serious eye damage. It also contains crystalline silica: do not breathe dust, and use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Review the full Safety Data Sheet before use.
