AQUASET II-G™

AQUASET II-G™ is a versatile granular absorbent used to treat aqueous solutions with extremely high levels of dissolved solids — such as neutralized acids and bases — and water-miscible organic liquids. It is the absorbent of choice for liquids that are too salty or contain levels of organics too high for regular AQUASET®.

What is AQUASET II-G™?

Pile of AQUASET II-G coarse granular absorbent

AQUASET II-G™ is a granular sepiolite absorbent used to solidify aqueous liquids — built for aqueous solutions with extremely high levels of dissolved solids, such as neutralized acids and bases, and for organic liquids that are mixed with water and are water soluble or miscible (e.g. alcohols, benzenes, glycols, low-molecular-weight ketones).

When a liquid is too salty or its organic content is too high for regular AQUASET®, AQUASET II-G™ is the absorbent of choice.

Like other Fluid Tech absorbents, AQUASET II-G™ irreversibly binds radioactive and hazardous constituents through naturally occurring ion-exchange mechanisms and forms inert solids, stabilizing wastes both chemically and physically — and the volume increase of wastes treated with Fluid Tech products is typically less than 20%, reducing container, transportation, and disposal costs.

What waste types does AQUASET II-G™ treat?

AQUASET II-G™ is recommended for neutralized strong acids, neutralized weak acids, and water-miscible organics — with loading rates published for silicone emulsions, evaporator concentrates, and ethylene glycol solutions as well.

  • Neutralized strong acids — 8 to 10 lbs/gal
  • Neutralized weak acids — 10 lbs/gal
  • Water-miscible organics (alcohols, benzenes, glycols, low-molecular-weight ketones) — 10 lbs/gal
  • Silicone emulsions — 8 to 12 lbs/gal
  • Evaporator concentrates (BWR & PWR) — 8 lbs/gal
  • Ethylene glycol solutions — 8 to 10 lbs/gal (0–35% EG), 10 lbs/gal (35–60% EG), 12 lbs/gal (60–90% EG)

Loading rates per the Fluid Tech Recommended Media and Loading Rate Guide. Rates vary by waste stream — request a recommendation specific to your application.

How is AQUASET II-G™ applied?

AQUASET II-G™ is a granular product that may be added to the liquid solution, mixed into a wet material, or placed under it so that it is available to absorb any liquid released.

Fluid Tech products are designed to stand alone or be used in combination with one another — there is literally no combination of wastes that cannot be solidified. Wastes solidified with Fluid Tech products maintain their physical integrity through freeze-thaw conditions and vibrational stresses encountered during transportation, ensuring no incidental or free-standing liquids develop prior to inspection at the final disposition or storage facility.

What should I know about handling AQUASET II-G™?

AQUASET II-G™ contains crystalline silica (quartz), which may become airborne — do not breathe dust from this material, and keep dusts from accumulating on surfaces, per the Safety Data Sheet.

The material can be slippery when wet, and water should not contact the product until time of use to preserve product utility. AQUASET II-G™ is non-flammable, non-combustible, and not regulated for land, air, or sea transport.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use AQUASET II-G™ instead of AQUASET®?

AQUASET II-G™ is the absorbent of choice for liquids that are too salty or contain levels of organics too high for regular AQUASET®. Use it for aqueous solutions with extremely high levels of dissolved solids, such as neutralized acids and bases, and for water-soluble or water-miscible organic liquids such as alcohols, benzenes, glycols, and low-molecular-weight ketones.

What is AQUASET II-G™ made of?

AQUASET II-G™ is a granular sepiolite product — greater than 90% sepiolite, with 10–15% crystalline silica (quartz), per Safety Data Sheet FTL-080-0004.

Can AQUASET II-G™ solidify glycol solutions?

Yes. Per Fluid Tech's Recommended Media and Loading Rate Guide, AQUASET II-G™ treats ethylene glycol solutions at 8 to 10 lbs/gal for 0–35% EG, 10 lbs/gal for 35–60% EG, and 12 lbs/gal for 60–90% EG.

Is AQUASET II-G™ hazardous to handle?

AQUASET II-G's Safety Data Sheet carries the signal word Danger: it contains crystalline silica (quartz, 10–15%), and per the SDS may cause cancer through chronic inhalation, may cause respiratory irritation, and causes damage to lungs through prolonged or repeated exposure when inhaled. The SDS directs users not to breathe dust from this material and to keep dusts from accumulating on surfaces. The material can be slippery when wet and is non-flammable and non-combustible. It is not regulated for land, air, or sea transport. Review the full Safety Data Sheet (FTL-080-0004) before use.
